About The Grand Palais
The Grand Palace is a large glass exhibition
hall built for the Universelle Exposition of 1900.
It was built at the same time as its neighbour the Petit
Palais.
The Grand Palais has not been without misadventure,
having suffered from floods in 1910 when the river Seine
breached its banks. In 1993, a glass panel fell 148
feet from the dome roof. Fortunately nobody was injured
in the incident, but the central hall was closed by
the authorities until the integrity of the building
could be assured. It reopened in the autumn of 2005.
